a brief taste of italy - venice/venezia.

i took over 1000 photos during my recent trip to italy. can you blame me? i traveled to venice, florence, assisi, pisa, the isle of capri, pompeii, sorrento, naples and rome, so you can imagine how many photos i have to sift through. i will do a separate post for each city!

here is a little handful of photos from my days in venice. in venice, i passed over the bridge of sighs, saw a glass blowing demonstration, ate a prosciutto sandwich in the square, went on a gondola ride, watched people run with pigeons and walked through the doge's palace. i also had some of the best gelato here during the entire trip (only other awesome gelato was in rome!). my hotel was located near the lido di jesolo and i was able to shop at night - and eat aforementioned gelato!

The Doge's Palace is a gothic palace - the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice.

The Bridge of Sighs - the enclosed bridge passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment. The bridge name, given by Lord Byron in the 19th century, comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice out the window before being taken down to their cells.
